Bryan Lee O’Malley

Born: February 21, 1979 Ontario, Canada

Bryan Lee O’Malley is a Canadian comic artist and writer, best known for his Scott Pilgrim Series.  He is also a musician under the alias, Kupek.

Biography

O’Malley is half Korean and half French-Canadian, currently married to fellow artist, Hope Larson, and currently resides in Los Angeles.   He briefly attended the University of Ontario before moving to California with his friend Long Vo and starting his career in comics, he returned to Canada in 2001.

Career

Before publishing his own works, O’Malley illustrated for the Oni Press miniseries Hopeless Savages: Ground Zero.  His first publication was Lost at Sea, which was shortly followed by his Scott Pilgrim series (2004-2010), published by Oni Press.  O’Malley’s next graphic novel SECONDS was recently confirmed in 2011.

Work

O’Malley’s work often addresses the theme of personal growth and offers an innovative rendition of the “coming of age” tale often addressed in literature.  His characters reflect the despondent and often “lost” mentality of subculture twenty-somethings as they wander through life trying to discover who they are.  Scott Pilgrim is famed for its stylistic character design and penchant for pop-culture references laced throughout the artwork and character dialogue.
